5 Powerful Personal Growth Tips

by Matthew M. DeSilva

Do you struggle with bad habits? Discover five personal growth tips to help you create positive change in your life.

Focus on One Area of Your Life

Once you make the decision to focus on personal growth and to invest time to improve your life, a natural tendency is to try to change everything at once. You feel fresh and motivated. You feel as though you can do anything. These feelings may cause you to try and make changes too fast.

Center yourself by taking a few moments to jot down the areas you’d like to see personal development in. You may want to learn how to develop your relationships better, develop self-confidence, become a quality public speaker, read more books, invest time as a volunteer, change your diet, etc.

Once you have your list in front of you, begin to rate each area from most important to least important. Although you probably feel they’re all important, there’s most likely two or three that jump out at you as areas you want to see the most immediate improvement in.

Next, pick one to begin with. Understand that creating change requires effort and concentration. Most likely, you already live a busy life. Give yourself a chance by changing one thing at a time. If you try to take on too much too soon, the tendency will be that you’ll feel overwhelmed. Once you’re overwhelmed, the chances of giving up increase.

By focusing on one area first, you’ll be able to work at it until you see positive change. This success will only serve to strengthen your resolve and allow you to feel great about yourself. Be careful to heed this advice. If you quit from overworking yourself, the remaining personal growth tips won’t hold any value for you.

Avoid Expectation of Immediate Results

Once you’ve selected the area to begin working on, don’t look for immediate results. Although you live in a society that has gotten you used to 24-hour diets or tomato vines producing within days, your mind and spirit take longer to realize personal change.

Give yourself time as you begin to shed old habits and create new ones. An amazing aspect about personal growth is that you can invest days or weeks investing time in positive change and feel as though you’re treading water. All of a sudden, though, the area you’ve been focusing on will seem to magically improve.

There’s nothing magical about it. You’ve spent time helping your mind wrap itself around a new idea or habit. You’ve invested hours re-wiring yourself for a better way. At first, you’ll fight the change. It seems hard. Over time, however, the new habit becomes internalized. What usually happens next is that everything “clicks” and your new habit becomes natural for you.

Just remember that this won’t happen for you if you expect instant results and quit too soon out of frustration. Have patience with yourself and allow for the time needed to experience personal growth.

Listen to Your Inner Voice

All the personal growth tips in the world won’t help if you aren’t ultimately in tune with your inner self. Personal growth in any area of your life is directly related to your spiritual well being. Whenever you’re traveling down a life path unfit for you, your inner voice will provide you with tiny whispers, if you’ll only listen.

Sometimes personal growth can be realized more quickly simply because you set aside quiet time to think or meditate on what it is your inner self is trying to tell you.

Be Willing to Move on

The previous personal growth tip leads directly to the idea that you need to be prepared to sometimes move away from a current life path. For example, you may be working on your people skills to help with your sales job. Your inner voice may be murmuring the desire to move away from sales.

If your inner soul truly senses that sales isn’t right for you, you might be best served with finding acceptance in this idea and moving toward a different path. Maybe your newly discovered people skills will aid you in this new path. This is only an example. The message, though, is to listen when your inner voice speaks.

Work Toward Your Life Purpose

Working through personal growth tips for specific areas of your life should be seen through the perspective of your life purpose. Much of the misery people live through in today’s world comes from a lack of life purpose knowledge. Realize that until you invest a substantial amount of time on discovering and then living your life purpose, you’re going to feel a certain amount of emptiness.

If you’ll take the time to discover what your true purpose is in life, you’ll discover that personal growth happens quite easily. This is because you’re spending your waking hours doing that which you’re most passionate about. This passion breeds confidence and expertise.

By following the above personal growth tips, you’ll begin to view life from the paradigm of your life purpose, you’ll be in tune with your spiritual side, and you’ll live abundantly as you create positive change one good habit at a time.
